Landscape conservation areas are stipulated in a statutory regulation of the Free State of Thuringia for regions where a special protection of nature and landscape is important in order to preserve the efficiency of the natural balance and the beauty of the characteristic landscape.
At the moment there are 7 stipulated conservation areas in the Saale-Orla-District with an overall area of 31,729 hectares covering 27.6 % of the whole district area.
The biggest landscape conservation area is called “Obere Saale” with a pro rata area of 17,021 hectares in the Saale-Orla-District. The smallest landscape conservation area in the administrative district covers only 26.91 hectares; it’s the “Drommberg”.
