Agriculture in the Saale-Orla-District
Almost 39,000 hectares of agricultural crop land and 14,000 dairy cows
Half of the entire district area is used agriculturally. 40 per cent of this area is forest. The remaining 10 per cent are agriculturally used land and area covered with water.
There are 369 farming businesses of different sizes in the Saale-Orla-District. They farm 38,708 hectares as agricultural crop land and 11,448 hectares as grassland.
And they carry on a very intensive livestock farming with more than 39,000 cattle, thereof 14,000 dairy cows.
The average “milk-yield” per dairy cow in the Saale-Orla-District is definitely higher than the Thuringian average: 8,170 kg milk per cow and year compared to 8,000 kg in the Thuringian average.
Modern agriculture in our district employs 1,543 people at present.
